An underrated foodie state, the Delaware locals actually take their signature dishes quite seriously. Form the fresh vegetables grown right on Delaware farms to the blue crabs which local watermen catch right off the Delaware Bay, the food that every fisherman and farmer brings to the table, is something that those from Delaware take pride in.
With so many small and quaint restaurants making it a point to serve the most delicious and freshest meals on a daily basis, eating local in Delaware is easy. To top it off, there are various dishes representing this wonder state, these dishes can never be recreated outside of Delaware. Here are a few of those iconic dishes.
1. King/Queen Cut Prime Rib
Served at Walter’s Steakhouse in Wilmington, this prime rib is definitely a meal that you must try when in Delaware. The locals claim that it is the very best in the entire state and people have left stating it is the best they have ever had, anywhere. Even just the Queen Cut is quite a large portion, top it off with crab imperial and you are in for a real treat.
2. Thrasher’s Fries
Now before you say that fries are not a meal, you have to try the giant bucket of iconic Thrasher fries that are served on the Boardwalk. Since 1929, these fries have been a Delaware favorite.
Yes you read that right; nothing says “Slower Lower” like the muskrat dinner the Southern Grill of Ellendale serves up on Wednesdays.
4. Crab Cakes
Trying the crab cakes served at Woody’s in Dewey Beach is an absolute must. These crab cakes are not only considered to be the absolute best in Delaware and due to their meaty and always fresh ingredients, they are actually some of the absolute best in the entire region. Aficionados have gone as far as saying that they definitely rival the well-known Maryland crab cakes.
Big Fish Grill in Rehoboth Beach serves a delicious Cioppino. What could be better than shrimp, fish, mussels, clams and scallops all fresh-from-the-bay and simmering in a tomato, garlic wine broth which is served over pasta. I cannot think of anything that is better and yes the best Cioppino in all of Delaware is served at the Big Fish Grill in Rehoboth Beach.
These are just five of the many delicious and iconic dishes that Delaware has to offer. Make sure that you ask the locals when in the area and take the time to eat where and what they recommend, you will not regret it.
